Our adviser and client research tell us that many investors want to ‘do good whilst doing well’
What part do advisers play in Sustainable Investing?
Our adviser and client research tell us that many investors want to ‘do good whilst doing well’ - essentially contribute towards addressing the challenges facing people and the planet whilst still achieving a return. Whilst governments are making pledges e.g., for the UK to reach net-zero by 2050, this won’t happen through government investment alone. As gatekeepers to private capital, advisers can work with clients and educate them on sustainable investments, helping to direct capital to achieve some of these objectives and support clients' sustainable preferences.

Advisers play a critical role in channelling sustainable investing to help meet net zero targets by 2050, but explaining the impact to clients can be a challenge.
Gillian Hepburn, Head of UK Intermediary Solutions, Schroders, explains the importance of education in sustainability and tailoring solutions to client investing preferences.

Schroders, on how advisers can tailor sustainable solutions to client preferences
What are some of the challenges?
The challenges for many advisers are often around the suitability of the investment solution to support client preferences. Even though over 80% now consider ESG factors when selecting investments, advisers still tell us that they need ongoing help and education to support client conversations – about 40% of advisers in our recent survey told us that they still lacked confidence in this area.
However, clients are expecting advisers to help and inform them. Client reporting is also important to demonstrate positive impact, and alignment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals for example.

How can Schroders help?
In addition to delivering a range of products including sustainable model portfolios, we also deliver training options both face to face and online. We use adviser webinars, support guides such as our new Net-Zero guide, but also discuss how we analyse the companies we invest in using our proprietary tools.
Using these principles, we have developed a module to engage advisers using their own business as the case study. This can help to explain how we analyse the E, S and G credentials of companies we invest in but also help an adviser to benchmark their own business and drive changes – in other words, ‘walk the talk’.
We will be working through this at our session at the Sustainable Investment Festival and hope that this will be really interactive and perhaps some fun. For every adviser business who contributes their data for benchmarking we will be making a donation to the Felix project which provides up to 6,000 meals a day for vulnerable people using surplus food from supermarkets and restaurants.
